12 Baby Essentials for the First 3 Months – You’ll LOVE #3

Baby things to buy before birth

What are the baby essentials for the first 3 months?

Diapers and milk.

A friend randomly told me that when I was sitting very pregnant, and it had a very calming effect on me.

Prior to hearing that, I was frequently wondering whether I had all the right things or if I was missing something and didn’t even know it.

I was spending lots of time overthinking about baby items, so the diapers and milk comment made me feel at ease.

And now that I am on the other side, I agree! The main things needed for a newborn are simply diapers and milk! (And a car seat)

If you’ve got those, you will be fine! Nearly everything else is extra.

Some of the extra, though, can really make the new stage of parenthood a whole lot easier. And as a tired new mama, easy is important.

Baby Essentials for the First 3 Months That Simplify Parenting

1. Graco 4Ever DLX Car Seat

car seat that grows with the child from infancy onward

Why THIS car seat? It is all the stages of a car seat that you need in one single purchase!! Graco 4Ever grows with your child, as it transitions from rear-facing, to forward facing, to high-belt booster, to backless booster.

It is a car seat you will have for 10 years! You will definitely get your money’s worth.

With over 26,000 five star reviews, it is a POPULAR choice with parents. We LOVE ours. No complaints.

I know a lot of people opt for an infant car seat that attaches to their stroller. If you go that route, you can skip the Graco 4Ever and get the Graco Slimfit 3 in 1 Car Seat. This car seat is everything the Graco 4Ever is, minus the infant stage. We have this one, too. It is awesome.

With nearly 40,000 five star reviews, parents LOVE it, and you will too!

2. Piddle pad car seat protector

a padded insert for car seats to protect against diaper blow outs

Why THIS product? If your baby has a diaper explosion, the piddle pad will be your life saver.

One time we were driving out of town when one of our children had the biggest diaper explosion…so big that the poop shot out of his onesie.

We pulled over to a gas station, changed his clothes, and threw the piddle pad out. His car seat was as good as new because the piddle pad took the hit. We were able to keep on driving.

3. SwaddleMe by Ingenuity Pod

two baby swaddles

Why THIS swaddle? It is the simplest, coziest swaddle both you and your baby will LOVE.

Watching the nurses swaddle our babies in those big swaddle blankets was stressful. Swaddling is an art to be able to do it just so, where your baby won’t wriggle free.

Then there are all sorts of swaddles with velcro. Velcro is NOT convenient in the washing machine or dryer; it sticks to everything. Reformatting the velcro to have the swaddle ready for use is not quick and easy either.

The SwaddleMe is seriously so simple with it having only a zipper to master. When you are tired and changing diapers in the middle of the night in the dark, you will be so glad all you are dealing with is a zipper.

We ordered lots of these. Our babies did frequent spit-ups and dirtied their swaddles often. Having at least 6 of these on hand was super helpful, especially as a tired new mama.

4. MAM Pacifiers

two pacifiers

Why THIS pacifier? There is no “right side up”, so it is fuss free in that regard. MAM states this pacifier is approved by 94% of babies, so the odds of your little one liking it are high.

Our firstborn is the only one who liked pacifiers, and MAM was her favorite. I recommend having a few different brands for your baby to try. Then, when you learn the kind he/she likes, purchase more.

Another great kind is Philips AVENT Soothie Pacifier. With THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of five star reviews, it is a safe route to go. My kids were not hot on this pacifier, but you never know…It might be the one your baby loves!

5. Burp Cloths by Muslin

10 white burp cloths for newborn

Why THIS burp cloth? Honestly, I think any burp cloth will do. All are soft and absorbent. I just recommend having lots of whatever kind you choose. And this one comes in a pack of 10, which is awesome.

They were our go-to ones. With THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of five star reviews, we are not alone in loving these.

6. Kick & Play Playmat Piano Gym by Fisher-Price

play mat for newborns

Why THIS play mat? I love this play mat because of the piano. It grows with the child. Keep it vertical as shown in the photo for when your baby is discovering his/her legs and wants to kick, kick, kick the keys. Have the piano laying on the floor for tummy time or horizontally connected when your baby is sitting up.

The piano plays pretty sounds and has playful sing-along songs that become lots of fun dancing to. This was well-loved in our house.

This is a HOT baby item with THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of five star reviews.

7. Onesies with Mitten Cuffs by Gerber

unisex onesies with fold-over mittens for babies

Why THIS onesie? Babies’ nails grow fast. They easily scratch their faces, leaving marks on their delicate skin. Baby mittens rarely work because they fall off easily. But if you have fold-over mittens already incorporated on the sleeves like this onesie does, you won’t have to worry.

Our daughter has a scar on her face from one of her nails scratching her when she was only a couple days old. It is a tiny scar only I see, but I wish I would have known to protect her face better.

After that incident, we had her wearing these onesies as often as possible.

8. Knee-high Socks by J Poqobog

knee-high socks for infants

Why THESE socks? Babies kick socks off so easily if they are not knee-high. When you are trying to keep their little feet warm, knee-high is the way to go! Plus, this style in particular has a few assorted options to choose from that are all super cute!

9. Baby First Aid Kit by American Red Cross

first aid kit for newborn babies

Why THIS kit? A baby shopping list for first time moms is not complete without a newborn health and grooming kit.

With THOUSANDS of five star reviews, you can’t go wrong with this one. I loved it for the thermometer.

Check with your pediatrician, but we were told rectal temperatures were the most accurate way to take a baby’s temperature. Not only that, but it also helps with regularity of bowl movements.

As my children have progressed into toddlerhood, we use a forehead thermometer, but a rectal one is important in the beginning.

Having an extra baby brush and bulb syringe is really nice, too. It was surprising how often extra ones came in handy for us.

10. 3 in 1 Baby Bassinet by Koolababy

Why THIS bassinet? Voted as an Amazon’s Choice, this bassinet is a smart pick! The versatility is what has me sold.

The fact that it can change from a bedside sleeper to a crib to a play pen is AMAZING. When you click on the link, you can see how compact it is for traveling, another huge plus.

We were given a hand-me-down bassinet that worked well, so I did not use this particular bassinet. However, it would definitely be my first choice because the one we had was simply a bassinet, nothing more.

I love that this one is compact enough and mobile enough to go with you from room to room so that you can do whatever else you need to do but still keep an eye on your baby.

11. Elvie Breast Pump

hands free breast pump

Why THIS breast pump? A hands free breast pump is life changing!!

By the time my second child came, I could not successfully stay plugged into a wall to pump for 15 minutes without my firstborn interrupting because she needed something. Pumping while parenting multiple children by myself while my husband was at work was nearly impossible until I purchased Elvie.

If you are wondering about Elvie vs Willow, I know many moms who use both. I chose Elvie because it can hold a little more than Willow. However, you have to stay upright with Elvie or your milk will spill (so no bending over to pick up a toy, for example). I hear Elvie’s customer service is better than Willow’s, but maybe that has changed.

You probably can’t go wrong with either one. I hear great things about both.

I literally was able to pump anytime anywhere–while I drove to work…while I held my babies…while I was out to dinner even!!

I will say, though, that my milk supply naturally ran out before I made it to six months. Who knows if it was because of Elvie or if it was some other reason. While my old plug-into-the-wall Medela breast pump pumped more efficiently (as most plug-in ones do), I literally could not use it for reasons mentioned above.

I am so grateful for the freedom Elvie gave me.

Know that insurance covers many breast pumps! At the time, Elvie was not offered under insurance yet, but that could change!

Tip: For the baby bottles that you choose, have a variety in 4 oz and 8 oz. It is recommended to have 10 to 16 bottles in both sizes. But before purchasing ALL 10 to 16, have a sample of 2 or 3 different brands in 4 oz first.

This is because not all bottle nipples are the same, and babies can be very particular as to which ones they like. Once you know the brand your baby favors, THEN get the full quantity you need.

12. Hatch Rest Sound Machine

sound machine for babies, toddlers, and beyond, controlled by a cell phone

Why THIS sound machine? Not only is this sound machine vetted by Forbes as one of the BEST you can have for your baby, it also has THOUSANDS of five star reviews.

Hatch Rest grows with your child from infancy to toddlerhood and beyond. It is more than your average sound machine because it instills a bed time routine, a time to rise routine, and it sleep trains!!

I did not understand the depth of the Hatch Rest until I was desperate to get our 2 year old to sleep past 4 am…A friend recommended I try this amazing device to solve our struggles. And it worked!!

The Hatch Rest has turned out to be one of my most favorite purchases. For more on this amazing sound machine, read The Magic of the Hatch Rest Sound Machine.

Have You Heard About the Tinybeans App?

Tinybeans app logo

This technically is not a baby essential for the first 3 months. But, it is my most favorite baby item I have ever purchased, so I wanted to share!

Why THIS product? Tinybeans allows you to easily save and share your most precious moments with your closest family and friends. Parents can capture their children’s life stories through photos, videos, and written messages and keep them all secure in one safe place.

Tinybeans is so much more than backup storage, as it is also a space with amazing parenting articles and advice. The way it organizes your photos into calendars is my most favorite part.

We love watching the slide shows and creating the photo albums provided by Tinybeans.

Most importantly, I love having a place where I can easily access all the beautiful moments with my children and family where I know they are safe and secure. I absolutely LOVE Tinybeans.
